Thoughts About Being an Immigrant

When my grandparents immigrated here, they were quick to refer to themselves as Americans. They stopped referring to themselves as Germans.  If pressed, they explained that they were Americans who had moved here from Germany.  The same was true of our friends who moved here from Spain.  Is that the attitude of immigrants today?   Is there a difference?
