The Nazi Twins

Chapter 1 – Desperate Encounter

. . . . . . We headed for the park, where we could take shelter in the trees lining its entrance. As we ran, my pounding heart blocked all noises except for the voice inside me, “What did you just do!

Within minutes, we heard the sirens. We moved quickly into the shadowed park, keeping to the tree line and listening for the footsteps of German soldiers or the sound of bicycles that the police used to patrol the park at night.  If anyone was caught out after curfew, it would automatically result in an arrest without question. And I had blood on my sweater.

When the sirens were joined by the horns of French police, we knew that the dead soldiers had been discovered. The hunt was underway.

From the trees, we spotted several policemen on bicycles following the path in our direction. I considered leaving the park, but we couldn’t risk being seen in the well-lit streets of Paris. We scrambled behind a thicket of bramble bushes just as a bicycle rounded a curve in the path and its headlight illuminated the spot where we had been standing.  Bicycle brakes squealed to a stop. There were two of them.

We heard distant voices shouting orders in both French and German. The French police were to scour the grounds with their flashlights. The Germans would call for their dogs. We both knew what capture would mean. I started shaking all over from both fear and exhaustion and, when I glanced at my airman, I saw desperation and hopelessness in his eyes.  Then I heard one of cyclists say, “Let’s not wait for the Germans to come back with their dogs. Every second we wait is another second they can distance themselves from us.  Grab your flashlight and let’s see what we can find.” . . .
